My name is J. R. and I’m a enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. My grandmother was born on the reservation, but left when she married my grandfather who was in the military. She moved all over the U.S. and even spent a few years in Germany. They were eventually stationed in Alabama where I was born. Growing up here gave me a lot of opportunites, but I had to grow up away from my culture. I’m working on fixing that now by learning our language and what it means to be a Lakota.
